In 1969 the Royal Australian Mint released the first dodecagon (12 sided) into circulation replacing the original 1966 round silver coin. Due to the rising cost of silver it was decided that a more cost effective alloy should replace the ‘66 coin with the new cupro nickel coin (75% copper and 25% nickel). Because of it’s distinctive 12 sided shape it was easier to differentiate the coin from the 20c coin.
In 50 years since, the familiar dodecagon has featured five different effergies of Her Magesty Queen Elizabeth 11, as well as a large range of commemorative reverse designs.
Included in this set is a special release gold plated coin.
