1910 was the year that our first coins were produced for the Commonwealth of Australia. The 1910 silver shilling arrived on the 1st March 1910 having been minted by the Royal Mint in London. The florins, threeoences and sixpences arrived later that same year. The Pennies and halfpennies arrived a year later with the George V head after the death of Edward V11 in 1910
It was on 14 February 1966 that Australia started to use decimal currency – the dollars and cents that we know today. This was a lot easier than the old money and showed off the unique Australian animals that set this country apart from the rest of the world.
